Other memorial sites in Pallars Sobirà
In the Pallars Sobirà region, other memorial sites have been recovered in connection with events that took place from 1931 onward. At the initiative of their respective town councils and with the help of the Government of Catalonia, they form part of the Network of Democratic Memorial Sites (Xarxa d’Espais de Memòria de Catalunya) coordinated by Democràtic Memorial.
Alins, borderland
Memorial signposting in different areas within the municipality of Alins de Vallferrera. Although it did not suffer battles during the Spanish Civil War, the municipality of Alins felt the presence of republican troops and civilians who had been evacuated from places such as Tírvia and Ribera de Cardós. During the post-war period, this municipality was a central backdrop of the invasion of Spanish territory by the anti-Francoist guerrilla fighters in October 1944. The towns of Tor, Norís and Alins all bore witness to major clashes between the guerrillas and the Spanish Civil Guard and the army.
The signposting is located in four areas. In Alins, reference is made to the general context of the border, the Spanish Civil War, the post-war period and World War II. In Norís, there is an explanation of the fortification of the Pyrenees during the post-war period, as several elements of the Pyrenees Defence Organisation were built near the village. Finally, in Virós the signs explain the Civil War (supply to the war front and the republican constructions in the area). A fourth sign installed in the area around the Vallferrera refuge highlights the role of the mountain shelter as a place of passage for the Pyrenean Mountain Battalion, which, after fighting in both the Battle of the Ebre and the Pallars Front, moved into the refuge in 1939 to prepare for their retreat into France.
Areas of Alt Àneu (Alt Àneu)
An itinerary through the different sites of repression located in the municipality of Alt Àneu. These are places where Franco’s forces murdered different residents of the Valls d’Àneu valleys.
Two plaques are posted in Sorpe: one at Prat de Giranto, where three people from València d’Àneu were executed; and the other at Prat de Fuster, the execution site of ten people from Isavarre, Boren and Àrreu. The excavation carried out in 2020 at Prat de Fuster, which formed part of the Plan de Fosses [Mass Grave Digging Plan] promoted by the Department of Justice of the Government of Catalonia through the Directorate-General for Democratic Memory, ended with the recovery of the bodies.
Road to exile through the Port de Salau pass (Alt Àneu)
A cross-border route has been signposted in the municipality of Alt Àneu. The “Road to exile via the Port de Salau pass” commemorates the exile of the people of Alòs d’Isil in late May of 1938. It was a time of uncertainty and fear in the region, as Franco’s troops had already executed many people in the municipalities of Alt Àneu, Llavorsí and Sort. Upon their arrival on the French side of the mountains, the people from Pallars were taken to Seix and later to Saint Girons and Clermont-Ferrand.
The signposting includes references to Alòs d’Isil, the Refugi del Fornet refuge and the Port de Salau pass. For many years, Port de Salau itself has been a symbol of the Occitan-Catalan twinning, with the traditional “Ascent” that is held on the first Sunday in August. Memorial Democràtic has worked to raise further awareness of its role as a place of connection between Pallars and Couserans.
Camí de la Llibertat, the Path to Freedom (Alt Àneu)
The “Camí de la Llibertat” or “Path to Freedom” runs through one of the trails used by World War II refugees, through Port de la Pala de Clavera pass.
Signposting has been installed on the pass itself, as well as at the cabin of Clavera, the Pont de Perosa bridge, the Refugi Fornet refuge and Alòs d’Isil. This route became particularly noteworthy because the most frequently used paths, including the one that ran through the Port de Salau pass, were closely patrolled by Nazi occupation forces, which even set up permanent surveillance here from 1943 onward. This route was also restored on the French side by the “Le Chemin de la Liberté” association. Based in Saint Girons (Ariège), since 1994 this association has been hosting an annual commemorative hike on the second weekend of July, connecting Seix with Esterri d’Àneu.
Border and bunkers at La Guingueta d’Àneu
A trail along the Torrassa reservoir following the remains of the bunkers of the Pyrenees Defence Organisation, which were built in La Guingueta d’Àneu. The four visitable bunkers are part of the 76th resistance centre and were built between 1947 and 1952.
At the start of the trail, there is information about the role of the Valls d’Àneu valleys as a passageway for hundreds of people who had fled from a Nazi-occupied Europe. Among them, in 1944, was a group of allied aviators who had been hidden in a cabin in the municipal area by a local family, the Soldevilas. They had maintained ties with the Pat O’Leary escape network, which was probably the most prominent of all the escape networks operating in the Pyrenees.
The war front in the area of Biuse (Llavorsí)
This is an itinerary along the defensive line of Biuse that was occupied by Franco’s army. The trail runs through front-line defensive positions which display extensive trenches, foxholes, shelter trenches and rest shelters, machine-gun nests and covered paths. The highest point of the trail, known as La Castelleta, is the most fortified part of the area and still preserves several casemates and defensive points.
Cemetery of Montardit de Baix (Montardit de Baix)
The cemetery of Montardit de Baix contains a mass grave where 19 people from the Pallars Sobirà region were buried following their execution by Franco’s troops in May 1938.
At the time of the event, at the initiative of the families of the victims, a tombstone was placed inside the enclosure with the names and birthplaces of each person. Later, in 2012, under the auspices of the Pallars Sobirà Regional Council, the Sort Town Council and Memorial Democràtic, an information panel was installed just outside the cemetery.
Paths of the Spanish Civil War in Rialp (Rialp)
During the Spanish Civil War, the standstill of the war front along the Noguera Pallaresa River led to the fortification of most of the positions and converted some of the surrounding areas into battlefields.
In the Roní area (municipality of Rialp), signposting has been provided along three itineraries representative of the period in which the war front remained in this area, displaying different elements of wartime archaeology (trenches, shelters, dry stone parapets and shelters). The paths leading to the positions of La Cassoleta and Pedres d’Auló have also been restored.
The signposted paths are: Camí de La Cassoleta (an 800-metre trail alongside the vestiges of defensive infrastructures from the Spanish Civil War); Camí del Comboi (a trail nearly five kilometres long that was the used by Franco’s army to transport supplies to the front line); and Ruta dels Combats de les Pedres d’Auló (a trail that connects the village of Roní with the area around La Cassoleta).
The bunkers of the Pyrenees defence line in Vall de Cardós (Ribera de Cardós)
In 1939, before the end of the Spanish Civil War, Franco gave orders to fortify the Pyrenees, with plans to erect more than 10,000 bunkers. The motives behind these costly constructions were diverse: in 1939, to prevent the return of the Spanish republicans; during World War II, to preclude a possible German or Allied attack; and even to prevent anti-Franco guerrilla activity.
Several constructions of this fortified line can be seen in the area around Ribera de Cardós. A signposted walking tour has been set up, starting from the Civil War and Post-war Information Centre in Vall de Cardós and enabling visitors to see the bunkers near the town and enjoy an extremely scenic landscape.
Civil War and Post-war Information Centre in Vall de Cardós (Ribera de Cardós)
Vall de Cardós played a key role in the different conflicts that took place around the Pyrenees during the 20th century. The Civil War and Post-war Information Centre located in Ribera de Cardós offers insight to these events and the heritage elements left behind by them.
As to the Spanish Civil War, the Centre focuses on the arrival of Franco’s army in the valley, the standstill of the war front and the indiscriminate repression perpetrated by the enraged soldiers, which led to the exile of many of the local residents.
Emphasis is placed on the role of the valley as an area of passage for those fleeing from a Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II. Finally, special reference is made to the bunkers that the Franco regime erected in the Pyrenees to fortify the border once the Civil War was over. An example of those bunkers can be seen in Vall de Cardós.
Romadriu Cemetery (Romadriu)
Many soldiers who died in combat in this area between May and December 1938 were buried in the Romadriu Cemetery. In that period, the war front remained between the Pallars Sobirà and Alt Urgell regions. A lectern built into the wall of the church commemorates the soldiers of the 10th Corps of the Republican Army.
Homage to Generosa Cortina (Son del Pi)
In front of the birthplace of Generosa Cortina Roig (Son del Pi, 1910 – Toulouse, 1987), a lectern has been installed in honour of this strong Catalan woman who, during World War II, collaborated with different Allied escape and documentation networks. She was arrested by the Gestapo and deported to the Ravensbruck concentration camp.
Centre Republicà Català de Sort [Catalan Republican Centre of Sort] (Sort)
A lectern placed in front of the Centre Republicà Català de Sort. The building was constructed by the members of the Centre and inaugurated by the President of the Government of Catalonia, Lluís Companys, in 1934. During the Spanish Civil War, it housed a military hospital and was subsequently put to different uses until 2010, following its refurbishment, at which time it became the Senior Citizens’ Centre of Sort.
Path of the lakes of exile (Tavascan)
An itinerary that runs through the town of Tavascan to the Port de Tavascan pass, just at the French border. This is a trail of considerable historical importance, as this route was used for centuries by the inhabitants of both Vall de Cardós and Ariège.
During the Spanish Civil War and the post-war period, the Port de Tavascan pass would bear witness to the flight of the inhabitants from both sides of the border: Spanish republicans who fled to France on the road to exile; and refugees escaping Nazism and World War II who were seeking the protection of Franco’s Spain. It was also an entry point for the anti-Franco guerrilla resistance units in October 1944.
Tírvia. Destruction and reconstruction of a town adopted by Franco (Tírvia)
Tírvia was the town most severely impacted by the clashes and bombings that took place after the arrival of Franco’s army in the Pallars Sobirà region. Ninety percent of the town’s buildings were damaged or destroyed. At the end of the war, the state would undertake their reconstruction.
This is an urban itinerary that reveals the social and economic consequences of the destruction of the town and the urban and architectural evidence of its reconstruction.
El Cuco itinerary (Vall de Cardós)
An itinerary that leads from Ribera de Cardós to the El Cuco fort. The first section of the route can be taken by car. After that, a footpath will lead up to the fort. At the start of the path, visitors can stop off at a building known as the “Edifici dels Militars” [“Soldiers’ Building”], which was used by the soldiers who were billeted in the town during the 1940s, after the Spanish Civil War.
Strategically located on the ridge that separates Vall de Cardós from the Valls d’Àneu valleys, El Cuco was occupied by Franco’s forces, as it enabled them to keep watch over Vall de Cardós, which was under republican control. El Cuco is a fortified structure with a circular layout that was connected to a long narrow trench. Just before arriving at the fort, visitors can explore an interesting defensive network that includes trenches, foxholes and a resting shelter.
The fortifications of Vilamur (Vilamur)
Archaeological restoration and signposting of the military remains near the village of Vilamur. The structures include bunkers, trenches and foxholes belonging to the Francoist positions located in this remote area between El Pallars Sobirà and L’Alt Urgell, which was damaged by republican air raids in May 1938.
