Perseguits i Salvats [Persecuted and Saved]
The Perseguits i Salvats project, launched by the Lleida Provincial Council, has restored and signposted six of the main trails used by those fleeing Nazism. Those paths afforded freedom to thousands of people, connecting the French departments of Haute-Garonne, Ariège and the Principality of Andorra with Val d’Aran, Pallars Sobirà, Alt Urgell and Cerdanya.
The signposting includes informative panels and direction signs along the routes. The trails have different levels of difficulty and there are itineraries for all ages and abilities. While most must be followed on foot, others can be taken by car or all-terrain vehicle.
The former Sort prison has also been made into a museum, offering information on this historic episode and the essential role played by the Pyrenees Mountains of Lleida and the people of this region who helped the Jewish families to escape.
