Route 2: Coll de Gireta (Val d’Aran)

One of the most frequently used escape routes was the one that connected the French department of Ariège with the Val d’Aran valley by means of the Port de Gireta pass (2,593 m). In 1944, this route facilitated the escape of different groups of young Jews who made it to Catalonia, thanks to the aid of networks created by the resistance organisations that had been set up in the South of France.

The trail began in the area around Saint Girons (Ariège), and once past the Port de Gireta pass, descended to Montgarri. It then continued towards Pallars Sobirà, along the path that ran parallel to the Noguera Pallaresa River, arriving at the cabins known as the Bordes de Perosa and later at Alós d’Isil.
